What are Keywords?

Keywords are Phrases

When we talk about keywords, we’re actually talking about “phrases” containing more than one actual word. So “driving lessons Liverpool” would be described as a keyword

The meta keywords tag

In html (the programming language often used for writing websites in) there is a meta keywords tag. This particular tag or snippet of code is designed to give information to robots/spiders/search engines/ to tell them what your website is about. However, since about 2006 Google has not paid any attention to the keyword meta tag in determining search engine position or ranking. So really we can disregard it (although you’ll still here people saying it’s important – maybe they’re not too well informed. You can read what Matt Cutts (one of the top guys at Google) says about it at his blog – http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/keywords-meta-tag-in-web-search/

Keywords in other meta tags

Whilst the keyword meta tag is no longer vey useful, it’s important to have your keywords in your title and description tags, and can be helpful in your h1 heading tags.

Keywords in the body of your text

As well as having your keywords in your title and description tags, it’s beneficial to include your most important keywords in the body of the text of your site. So if you are a driving school in Liverpool then you will want “driving school in Liverpool” to appear in the body of your site. It can be helpful to include this several times so that the search engines can see that this is an important topic that your site is about.  However avoid keyword stuffing (jamming your site with excessive keywords) or keyword cloaking (hiding your keywords from viewers by using the same colour text as the background)

NOTE: For customers of Wanasite, your website already incorporates meta keywords that are appropraite to your driving school in the title and description tags on your site and also includes some important keywords in the body of your text
